Open workshops

We offer open workshops in central London for individual practitioners, or two practitioners from the same team or service. Open workshops are a great way to find out about the Bridges approach to self-management support for people working in education, private practice, third sector and charities, students or practitioners who cannot attend team training.

What is the aim of individual practitioner training?

  • To enable individuals to develop effective strategies to integrate best practice in self-management support for patients and families in everyday clinical practice.

Who is it suitable for?

  • Frontline staff in health and social care of any grade, working in the acute or community settings.
  • Staff from the third sector or charities who work with individuals and families after brain injury or stroke, on a one-to-one or group basis.
  • A discount is available when two colleagues attend together.

What are the potential benefits for the service I work in?

  • Self-management support is widely talked about but little is known about the best ways to provide that support, and how to implement and sustain it. By attending these workshops you will enhance your own practice whilst developing an understanding of what might be needed to get a whole team working in a more person-centred way.
  • Teams who work in a targeted person-centred way can improve the quality of their interactions with patients and families, which in turn can see an improvement in measures of patient experience and satisfaction.  Secondary service outcomes that can be expected include improved efficiency.

What are the potential benefits for the patients and families I work with?

  • Patients and families who feel supported to self-manage feel greater confidence and control over their condition and daily lives. In turn this can bring about improvements in mood, functional ability, and perceived quality of life.
  • Read more about what patients think about our self-management tools.

How is the training delivered?

  • Bridges is two stage training with a full day (09.00 – 16.30) initial workshop and half day (09.00 –13.00) workshop approximately three months later.
  • The time in between workshops allows the practitioner to implement the Bridges approach to self-management support and return to the follow-up workshop with practical experiences to critically reflect on. Practitioners are required to write a case reflection in time for the follow-up workshop.
  • Training is usually delivered at a central London location, by two Bridges trainers. Bridges trainers often work alongside our Associate Trainers, who represent the multidisciplinary team and share their own experiences of implementing Bridges in practice.

Access to unique self-management tools

  • Where applicable to your caseload, you will be supplied with five copies of our unique self-management tools for either stroke, TBI or long-term conditions, to use with patients and families.
  • It is possible to come to the training if you work with a different caseload, for example amputee or falls rehabilitation, as we feel that the principles of self-management support can be universally applied.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the key policies and research in relation to supporting living with a long-term condition.
  • Appreciate the enablers and barriers to effective self-management in the long-term.
  • Understand the theoretical and evidence-base to the Bridges approach to self-management support.
  • Demonstrate practical methods of enhancing self-efficacy in individuals, thereby achieving greater control in their everyday lives.
  • Demonstrate greater awareness of different communication styles and their impact on supporting self-management.
  • Demonstrate ways of using the unique self-management tools with patients and families and across different clinical settings.
  • Understand ways of involving family, friends and carers in supporting self-management.
  • Develop strategies to evaluate and sustain self-management support in practice.

What do other practitioners say?

  • Despite already working in ways to support self-management, participants are able to identify ways to make it even more effective, often with surprising improvements in patient engagement.
  • An inspiring course that challenges current thinking and practice.
  • Participants enjoy hearing and learning from other practitioner’s experiences of using Bridges in practice during the follow-up workshop.
